I don’t belie-e-ve it!

Victor Meldrew, Babs is off again.

sukie-box

This large box was delivered today and I wracked my brain (what little I have) to think of what we were expecting in the post.  Needless to say, I couldn’t think of anything that size.  “Ooh!” I thought “A lovely surprise, I love surprises.”  “Ooh” Sukie thought “A lovely big box to play in”

Well it was definitely a surprise for me.  Just look at what was inside!

boxes

Can you believe that?  What a waste of paper, and worse than that, they had stretched a double layer of plastic over the contents to stop it rattling about.  That’s more plastic to add to the mountains of waste plastic we have already. What is annoying is that it wouldn’t be needed if they sent it in the right size package!

Just to add insult to injury, the jolly thing is no good to me.  It’s a remote control for a camera, but it doesn’t work with my model!

Have you ever received such wasteful packaging?

That’s the most ridiculous waste I’ve ever seen! Your tape is like the size of a pack of gum and they sent it in a box that can fit at least two Sukies. So does Miss Sukie get the new plaything?

I can’t say that I’ve ever seen that much waste of resources. That’s just plain awful. Who sent it? Complain to them. Well, I would anyway.

Have a terrific day and week ahead. :)

    Hi Babs,

I used to work for a certain assembly line where I was responsible for packing image retrieval servers (think Flickr and File-Photo for news services) as they were handed down to me.

The CPU went in one box, along with standard supplies like power-cord, extra screws and media-pack.

Any additional accessory had to go into a separate box ! Even something as ridiculous as an extra set of screws – and they didn’t go inside the big box but were shipped separately !

Because they pride themselves in the “strictest quality standards” even a small nick on the cardboard box was unacceptable !

I spent many hours, working “inside” a huge bin, working by exacto knife shredding brand new and not even unfolded cardboard boxes !

It all came down to what upper management said, I had no say in it. I didn’t even have a choice to save those boxes and take them home – shred or get fired !

I don’t understand why companies pride themselves in Six-Sigma – it only benefits the guys working in cushy chairs.
It’s a curse on the little guys.

Oh my word what a box for such a tiny little thing. Hey maybe you could write the word Christmas lights on it and send it over to your neighbor’s house!!

I am so glad to know that Sukie got a good laugh at my song. So did everyone else at the wedding. Hey I had to get up and dance as it was my song.

And I do believe this is the first time that I get to say Good Morning Babs! Good morning Babs, Mo and Sukie.

I hope you have a great week!!:-)))

Oh yes. Usually from just that sort of company. Techie stuff so often ends up being delivered in a ‘one size fits all’ package. We’ve been disgusted about that several times.

Amazon and Play are quite good though. Usually minimal, recycling packaging. Kudos!

  7. gengenNo Gravatar | 23 February 2009 at 11:38

I always receive like that it will really surprise us how big the box is but what is inside just a small package. maybe they do that so that you can pay for a big shipping cost. It is true its wasteful.

I recently had a cat scratching post delivered to work and the box was big enough for 2 people to get into if they curled up into the foetal position. It was extremely wasteful but caused much hilarity with everyone at work!

That actually drives me absolutely batty because it is such a waste and there is no excuse for it.

Truly wasteful, it’s really a disgrace and the company who sent it should be ashamed that something that simple they couldn’t get right! The bright side – at least the cat can play in it :)

Oh no! That totally sucks. I’ve received unecessary big box before. I don’t know why people do that. Waste indeed.

  12. beetleNo Gravatar | 23 February 2009 at 14:49

Kathy: Yes, Sukie got into the box immediately, though she prefers them bigger now that she’s fully grown. She likes charging around inside ;)

Jaffer: It is disgusting, the wastage that goes on. I know that paper gets recycled, but not without using more energy and resources to do it! I will admit that to receive a parcel in a very badly damaged box is unnerving, as you don’t know what damage may have been done to the item inside, but a small amount of damage is usually to be expected anyway!

Lauren: It certainly is a waste!

Shinade: Oh, to have to dance to it also, with everybody watching! I would have died of embarrassment ha ha! I hope you did a sexy number on them ;)

Jay: Yes, it’s obviously a ‘one size fits all’ box. When I used to make puppets, I prided myself on only using recycled boxes whenever I could! That was stated on my web site too! We used to go to the supermarkets and ask to look through their empty boxes.

gengen: I think it’s mainly so they can save money on buying in boxes to use for their deliveries. They then charge a flat postal rate to cover everything too!

LadyBanana: I know that items need to be protected from damage, and they have to be in larger boxes that are padded out, but some boxes are really ridiculous!

Blueyes: I suppose their excuse would be, if they had to order in lots of different size boxes, the price of their goods would need to be increased. Not a good enough excuse though.

NanjoDogz: Ha ha! Yes, The cat was pleased and came to inspect it immediately :)

Ivanhoe: It is a stupid waste, but I don’t think we’ll ever change it. We generally are a wasteful lot!

  13. Rich DansereauNo Gravatar | 23 February 2009 at 15:19

That is a tremendous waste. I have encountered the same thing when ordering cartridges online. The shipping company would probably save money on supplies if they used smaller boxes as well.

Rich Dansereau: Hi Rich! How are you? I suppose they go by the largest item they ship, and everything else goes in the same size box! Probably their cheapest option when buying boxes. Still it’s far too wasteful!

Yes Babs, this has happened to me several times. A small item is sort of vacuum packed to the bottom of the box, then padded all round with inflated poly bags, and then topped with yards and yards of screwed up beautiful quality brown paper. I think that next time it happens I WILL complain to the relevant company. It always makes me cross

Hi Babs…Oh yes! This is why I quit ordering from one of the biggest multi product on-line companies. I love their prices, and I love the speed with which you receive your package. I did a LOT of Xmas shopping there last year and would order small items, like CD’s, DVD’s, small toys etc. and EVERY SINGLE ONE came in an over-sized box. I received a CD in a box as large or larger than the one you showed on your blog stuffed with those blow-up plastic sleeves! UNBELIEVABLE! Love your blog!

amy lilley: It certainly is, and Sukie certainly is a beauty :)

Granny Grimble: All that unnecessary plastic! There should be strict guidelines for packaging!

Judy: Hi Judy, and welcome! I really think there should be something done to stop this awful waste, but if they do, you can be sure we’ll all pay dearly for any changes they make!

  22. Tony SingleNo Gravatar | 24 February 2009 at 7:58

What’s nearly as bad is when opening said packaging is like trying to break into Fort Knox! So, not only is it wasteful, but it is also hernia inducing! “Bleh,” is what I say to that!

  23. beetleNo Gravatar | 24 February 2009 at 18:42

Tony: Ha ha! You’re right about that. Some are almost impossible to open!

Oh no, you did not understand!!!! It was a nice surprize! You had to think so much about it and the beauty of the cat too. You needed time to open it.And… at the end you FINALLY find the thing! It’s a great game! I do something ike this from time to time too. The person has to open one pack, than the other pack, than the third, than… And lives in that state of curiosity and waits… It’s a great game, Babs!
