The effects are spreading
I don’t usually post about things like this, but this is close to home, and made us very sad. We are to lose our local Yorkshire Television studios. They are closing it down as a direct result of the credit crunch, having lost a huge amount of advertising revenue.
They have produced some excellent programmes like, ‘Rising Damp‘, ‘The Darling Buds of May‘, ‘A Touch of Frost‘, ‘Heartbeat‘ and one of the long running soaps ‘Emmerdale‘. Those are just a few that Mo and I always watched. There were, and are many more. Emmerdale will continue to be made, but I don’t know where.
It will be a big financial loss to the area too. Complete villages were used in the filming of some of these programmes. Not only were people paid for the use of their homes and land, but the crew and actors spent money in the village shops and bars. Many stayed for long periods of time, in the local hotels and boarding houses. It will be a huge financial loss to the area. To say nothing of the 400 jobs to be lost by the closing of the studio!
These are sad times.

I’ve seen a couple of those shows on stations here. I hope things get better soon.

That sucks; yes these are hard times. Hubby was suddenly laid off in January and it’ll be tough to find work at 50, especially now. But he is far from alone in that situation.

Hi Babs – but did you read the notes in the paper … This Morning could be axed by the end of the year and Coronation Street by 2010.
I am not a fan of Coronation Street. I mainly feel annoyed that some of the lovely traditional programmes are to be axed and at the moment all from one studio. We lost quite a bit when they closed down the Birmingham studios and often feel peeved that things got pushed over mainly to Manchester. At least if offered a bit more spread with some well scripted programmes coming out of the Yorkshire studios. Now it seems that it will all be either London or Manchester and this is very sad.
I don’t know about you but I was really looking forward to the next Sharpe – to think that they have shelved that too is really dispicable because look what they have left to be screened!
The other thing what is annoying are all of these other channels that have been created that appear to be screening utter drivel. Why not close down those channels and have one really good one?

It is a tragedy when things like this happen. It kinda feels like part of the community’s heritage is being lost along with the cash and jobs.

No one community should have only 1 industry to make it be sustaining. People should always have a few things they do or can do so that they can survive. When one door closes another opens. Things will get better for all.

????olqu??o?: Yes, these are bad times for many people.
Maureen: Sorry to hear about your husband. 50 is still young I’m sure he’ll get work when things pick up.
Jeff: Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! Particularly our local news and weather programme.
Sandee: Yes, it’s a hard time for many. It will pick up though. It always does :O)
Polly: I hadn’t heard about ‘This Morning’ and ‘Coronation Street’. I saw the very first episode of Corrie, back in the sixties :O) I haven’t always watched it, and I think it lacks the real ‘characters’ it used to have, but it has become part of our TV heritage! Sadly, it seems to be all the long running favourites that are going, and we are to be left with (as you say) a lot of drivel! Yes any programming they want to continue will be going to Manchester too!
Tony Single: You are so right! We will miss some of the programmes. It’s not as bad as those losing their livelihoods though.
Lauren: I agree with you, but many small villages have very limited resources. Our village was built for the steel industry workers. It started out as one row of houses for the workers. As the industry grew so did the size of the village. When the steel industry ended, the village was devastated. Sadly it’s happened before, with the coal mining industry. Thankfully it all happened long before Mo and I moved here.

So sorry to hear about that. I’m afraid it’s happening everywhere. We are in for some tough times before it gets any better.
Take care.

I’ve heard of all those shows except for “Heartbeat”; in fact I’ve seen episodes of “Emmerdale Farm,” as I remember it, when I lived in Ireland.
That’s a shame. I agree with one of the above posters: it’s like you’re losing a piece of your heritage. Sad.

Sad times indeed, Babsie. And the saddest thing is that these things will be lost forever, because they probably won’t reopen the studio when things eventually pick up again.
On a smaller scale, I went to one of my favourite craft and bead shops yesterday to find it gone without trace. This is the second one to close, and these little specialist shops are a real loss.

Swubird: I think you’re right. It will get worse before it gets better, I fear.
JD: I actually had to hold back from crying when I saw it on the local news programme. You could see how sad they were.
Jay: Barnsley is almost like a ghost town, with so many small shops gone! Sadly they will be gone forever. These people won’t have the resources to start up again.
It is a real tragedy Jay. I feel that more and more shopping will have to be online in the future.

I am so sad about this whole affair, and still quite can’t believe that it’s happening. How can they keep Big Brother and axe Heartbeat? I read that very soon more major pay cuts will be made in Corrie and Emmerdale, which will mean the big stars will be disposed of to help make ends meet. If this does happen, then I for one won’t want to follow these soaps any longer. Let’s hope that it’s mainly media scaremongering and radio at least, stays undamaged.

I am so sorry to hear about this Babs. Especially since it is in your local area and you and Mo are going to lose some of your favorite shows.
Everyone else is right too. Things are bad for everyone all over the world right now. I too think they will get worse before we see a turn around.
But, I am ever the optimistic and believe in the pendulum theory. Sooner or later it always swings back.
Please forgive me personally for the last couple of days. I have missed visiting but I just simply got tired yestreday and shut down early.
I didn’t hardly visit anyone. I slept for 12 hours straight and now hope to make up for lost time today.

Granny Grimble: I heard that Coronation Street will probably be gone by 2010. I don’t know how true that is. I should think radio is fairly safe, as it could mostly be recorded from people’s home if necessary. They don’t need fancy studios really.
Shinade: Yes, it’s sad to see them go but things could be worse – Things could ALWAYS be worse ;O) I agree that things will turn around again, although many things may get lost forever, along the way. No forgiveness needed. I also didn’t do any visiting yesterday!

As I was reading your post I could hear my local TV station WXXI trying to raise money. It’s an independent station, and the news is not slanted. I would hate to lose it, and sorry that your losing your station. Times are difficult. They say that we still have not hit bottom here in the states. However, the stock market is lowest it’s been in about 20 yrs. I guess we just have to hang on till it blows over. And pray that it’s over soon.

Well as usual I am running late. But, my little doggie has been sick. She threw up quite a bit last night and just wants me to keep rubbing her tummy.
I finally got some Pepto Bismol down her and she went and ate a little bit. If she’s not better tomorrow then off to the Vet. we go.
I would just be lost without her. She and my cat are my babies now.:-))))

I do not watch many of the programs mentioned but the better half does and she is not happy.
We live in the Central TV region which was split into 2 or 3 sub regions for the evening regional news program so we always had news about our area, now they have merged them together, now rather than getting 30 minutes of local news about the Eastmidlands, we get 10 minutes with the remaining 20 minutes local news for the whole of the Midlands, news 70 or 80 miles away is not local in my opinion.
Sorry but had to switch to BBC for local news now.

It’s an interesting thing – Americans think we’re the only ones suffering here, but this slow down is world-wide. I think our president is fool-hardy to pretend he can have any real effect on a worldwide economy.
