Mumbling for England!

posted by Babs on Monday, 16 March 2009

mobileWe were sitting in the waiting room. Mo had already had her mammogram and we were waiting for me to be called in.  There were two women sitting opposite.  Both held a slip of paper in one hand and a mobile phone in the other.  Both were squinting at the paper and tap, tap, tapping on their respective mobiles. Woman #1 finished what she was doing and slipped her mobile and piece of paper into her bag.  Woman #2 was not having as much luck.  It went something like this.

Woman #2 - moving her piece of paper back and forth to focus it…

“Mumble, mumble….This is too long…..” tap, tap, tap…..”I can’t see it…..mumble, mumble”…..tap, tap, tap…..

Mo and I chuckle.  Woman #1 looks our way and smiles…..

Woman #2 “How can I see what I entered?….it’s too long…..mumble mumble…..Look! It’s far too long …..Oh that’s nice!  They hung up on me!…..”

Mo and I laugh out loud.

Woman #1 – looks sheepishly our way and smiles again, while woman #2 mumbles on.

Mo and I  “What’s she doing?”

Woman #1 “Topping up” She smiles again and looks nervously at woman #2 who is mumbling for England.

Woman #2 “They hung up again!”…. tap, tap, tap…..”mumble, mumble…..”  She shifts agitatedly in her seat….. tap, tap, tap…..  “They hung up again!!!….”  silent pause….. “Oh I din it me sen” (Yorkshire for did it myself) A guilty, half smile crosses her lips as she realizes she’s been hanging up on herself all along.

Mo and I are in stitches now.

Woman #1 – while still looking nervous about laughing out loud, plucks up the courage to speak “She can’t even answer a text”

Woman #2 “well!…..tap, tap, tap…stupid things!…..mumble mumble…..”

Eventually woman #2 finishes and puts her piece of paper and mobile away, looking satisfied with herself and still mumbling about stupid mobiles.

I got called in for my mammogram.

The kids can really text well, but most adults don’t do so well. I would have been on the floor myself.

Have a terrific day Babs. :)

Hahaha! I sympathise with #2! I can’t read the numbers on my card or on my mobile without a strong magnifying glass and try manipulating the keys while holding one of them, lol! Hope your mammagram results are good for both of you! :) xxx

Texting is expensive for us Canadians as these monopolies charges us exorbitant prices. But texting is catching up here anyway (Yes, we are far behind in cellphone technologies than even some developing nations)

When I got a cell phone, for the very first time years ago, I liked the idea but my fingers gave up the fight with the bitter cold.

My next phone will have a full keyboard. No more of this hitting the same button again and again to text! LOL

Lauren: Yes, the kids can text like lightening :O)

Sandee: You’re right. I hated texting on my ordinary mobile.

Black Cat: That’s why I love my iPhone so much. It has a proper keyboard to type on, with nice big letters!

Shinade: We find out in a few weeks, but I’m hopeful for a good outcome :)

Jaffer: I am amazed! texting costs 10p (.179 Can$) here, which is why the kids use it all the time!

Stephanie: Yes I could never get the hang of those silly little windows and using the number keys. Texting was such a pain. Now, with my iPhone, it’s a breeze :)

Meleah: We thought it was, at the time :)

Hahaha! That poor woman, she sounds like me trying to top up my phone, or worse yet, trying to ring someone on International Roaming! Boy was the air blue in the US last year! LOL!

I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one that still finds a mobile phone an enigma. I’m quite good when it comes to making a call, although I still don’t know why, every now and then it tells me I can only make emegency calls! I’ve never mastered texting and heaven help me if I ever receive one. It will stay forever locked in my phone. Who knows, perhaps I’ve got hundreds in there somewhere!

Jay: You should hear me when I try to answer a text on Mo’s mobile! I top up on line. It’s so simple to do it that way.

Granny Grimble: I hated texting on my mobile before my iPhone. In fact I refused to. It’s a piece of cake now :)

Speedy: I don’t know how you do it! I have tweeted on my iPhone and commented on the odd blog too, but I think you are a techie genius ;)

They listened to everyone and I am back. I am dropping now and my ads are coming in like mad…I’m just saying if you want to get me cheap…I’m here again!!

    Happy day!!:-)

I’m always surprized by the youngs how fast are they with those cells! I was not able even to learn all the uses ecxept calling. But this is the GREATEST invention of our times!

  15. ShinadeNo Gravatar | 18 March 2009 at 18:56

Speedy is definitely telling the truth about that. He is the original Speedcat with everything.

Oh my I was up until 7am. I just now am getting a start for the day!!

You two are probably already settling for the evening!! I hope you have a nice one!!

I am waiting for my better half too. I sure do hope he makes it home fairly early!!

Liudmila: I hated texting with the usual mobile. Now I have my iPhone, it’s a breeze :) What would we do without our mobiles?

Shinade: Yes Speedy is a GREAT texter! I am like ships that pass in the night with all you bloggers from across the pond!

Hahahaha! Love the part about the Yorkshire terminology (thanks for that, I never would have figured it out!)

Well, daughter and I have unlimited texting for only $10 (yes, in Canada, Jaffer!) so we text all the time… we have great fun sending notes to each other. Sure, she is a lot faster (her fingers fly over that keyboard!) than me, but I am a lot faster now with my Blackberry. I hated the old phone keypad texting!

I used to hate texting until I got my iPhone. Now it’s fun!

I am addicted to blogging, texting and email. I am definitely steering clear of twitter as I am sure that would be next. And at least the mammogram is out of the way until next time – I dread those things, boobs were not designed to be flattened. Christine

BABS! That’s NOT funny…it takes me 20 minutes to type “I LUV U” to my granddaughter! However, I don’t believe I’ve ever hung up on myself! LOL…In retrospect…it was a LITTLE bit funny…

For some reason I have nightmares about trying over and over to dial a number and continually messing up. Each time, I go really slowly, and each time I misdial and have to start over.

When it comes to texting, it takes me forever. Probably because I insist on using proper capitalization and complete sentences. AND punctuation!

  22. beetleNo Gravatar | 19 March 2009 at 19:47

Faz the Cat: It’s easy to get hooked into all these things :)

Judy: Ha ha! I can laugh at it because I was just the same with my old mobile ;)

JD: Oh a woman after my own heart. I always punctuate and spell everything out in full. I can’t bring myself to type anything unless it’s correctly done. My iPhone makes it very easy with its fully functional keyboard, but I hated texting on my old mobile ;)

  23. KatNo Gravatar | 19 March 2009 at 21:58

I was laughing with this one…but at least with my Mum coming from Yorkshire, I understood that part!!

But I can’t text worth a damn!! I might as well not even have the function on my phone.

Also, I’ve left you an award over at my blog!! You don’t need to post it…just know I was thinking of you!

    Take care,
    Kat

  25. StaciNo Gravatar | 19 March 2009 at 22:26

I’m just going to come out and ask, at the risk of sounding like an absolute idiot. What exactly is “topping up”? I’ve never heard it used in the U.S. Granted, I don’t text much, mostly because it’s not included in my cell plan so I have to pay $.25 per message, but I’ve never heard my sister, the text messaging queen, use the phrase either.

  26. beetleNo Gravatar | 19 March 2009 at 23:17

Staci: ‘Topping up’ is only done by those on a ‘Pay as you go’ tariff. You top up the balance as and when you like. It’s a much cheaper option for those who don’t use their mobile a lot.

  27. Tony SingleNo Gravatar | 21 March 2009 at 12:19

Grrr… me and mobile phones do not get along either, therefore I don’t use it much. I often beg my lovely, patient wife to top it up for me whenever I do have to use it, because that’s how much I can’t stand to have anything to do with it! Grrr… razzin’ frazzin’… :p

  29. beetleNo Gravatar | 2 April 2009 at 23:14

Tony: I must admit to not liking many mobile phones either :)

Vampy Vic: Yes, 10 out of 10 for trying :)
