Oh my word! It’s carol!

posted by Babs on Friday, 24 April 2009

Do you remember Carol from my Oh Carol post?  Well I was sorting through some old photos today and look what I found.

Yes that is a toilet roll on the wall.  We were clowning around, as we did in those days.  Well, we didn’t want to do a boring thing like work now did we?

oh-carol

Don’t you think the hair is great?

I used to have my hair put up into a ‘beehive’ by the hairdresser once a week. It had so much laquer that it more or less kept in place till my next appointment. I used to scratch my head (which itched from so much laquer) by pushing a knitting needle ito the thatch and poking around! The things you are prepard to do for fashion when you are young.

Oh my goodness I can’t even imagine doing my hair like that.. man that would hurt like crazy trying to brush it smooth hehe.. let alone the poor guy you hook up with… lol I bet there were some walking around with bruises in them days :p hehe

Awesome! The characature you have on the Oh Carol! post is spot on! She does look like fun and who wouldn’t love a hairdo that could double as a handbag. Imagine all the things you could stuff in there!

Ivanhoe: It certainly was. Some days it was higher than others.

Barb: Yes, what about the ‘flick-ups’ Like wings each side of your head ha ha!

Sniffle: I remember back-combing my hair, but I never wore it like that :)

Granny Grimble: I never wore my hair in a style that I didn’t do myself each day, so no knitting needles for me :)

Vampy Vic: She was a fun person. We used to have a lot of laughs at work – in between our work. I guess the stiff hair was pay back time for the men, for all the grease they used to spread on their hair in the fifties!

Kathy: Haha! She needed somewhere to put her bits after landing on her basket and squashing it flat!

Swubird: I had a camera back then too. Just a simple snap camera, but I captured some memories.

Now that’s a crowning glory! I wouldn’t envy getting it down and trying to put a comb through it though!

    Hugs, Sarah x

My mother wore her hair like that and she actually used to wrap toilet paper around her hair before going to be to maintain the integrity of her set.

Sarah: I’m not sure, but I think they washed it out before brushing it.

Feefifoto: ha ha! I’ve never heard that one before! Toilet paper? ;)

Drowsey: We were being really silly and she was pretending to sit on the toilet. I have a photo where another friend is standing on the window ledge pretending to dive into the toilet. How daft we were ;)

JD: Are you serious? Yikes! It must have ruined hair – all that back-combing! Watch this space ;)

A great pic of memories no doubt! I remember watching my next door neighbour doing her hair up like that when I was a kid, it took ages, so much back combing and hair spray. I so wanted my Mum to do the same but she wouldn’t!

It’s wonderful!! I can remember spending hours in front of the mirror trying to make my hair do something similar! Of course, I couldn’t afford a can of hairspray every second day, so it never would. LOL!

  19. beetleNo Gravatar | 26 April 2009 at 22:50

Lady Banana: Well your mum may have just known what was better for her hair ;) There was nothing about it that resembled soft hair hahaha!

Jay: Yes, these hairstyles used to be so stiff and brittle! She used to go for a comb out the following week (not a wash) and back for a freshly washed beehive the week after. Some only had it washed once a month! I used to back-comb and lacquer mine when I was a teenager, but always washed it weekly :) Carol was a die-hard. When this photo was taken I was having Vidal Sassoon hair cuts!

I so remember that hairdo. I had one very similar. How fun. She is beautiful too.

Have a terrific day Babs. :)

Sandee: Surely you must be far too young to have ever worn that hairdo ;)

Kat: I have so many old photos, but many more have sort of disappeared. Funny how photos do that. I’m coming over right now.

Meleah: Photographs were not as sharp as they are today, but still captured lovely memories.
