Part 3 (final)

It wasn’t very long before our marriage finally ended.  There appeared to be no reason for this.  We didn’t argue,  and had no problems.  Money was plentiful.    There was nothing obvious to cause it to happen.  It just slowly ended.  Jim moved out and I was left with the other two, who very quickly started to treat me like I was the lodger. Life could have been better.

One night I was home alone and I heard a bang, and then movement in the hallway.  Thinking that the others had come home I waited for them.  There were more bangs and noises, but they hadn’t come home.  Their car wasn’t outside!  Now I was scared.  Should I sit and wait for the intruder to find me or should I go out and meet him head on, and suffer any consequences?  I couldn’t bear the thought of waiting for the unknown, so I went out to meet whoever it was.  I switched the light on and peered over the Bannister rail – Nobody was there!  The hallway was silent.  Part of me was glad, but the other part was now a little scared at what could have made these noises.   I went back into the lounge and got on with what ever I was doing before I was interrupted.  Eventually they came home, and it was forgotten.

Things got progressively worse in our household.  My friend’s personality seemed to be changing.  She was no longer the warm and caring person I had known for so long.  She became bitter and spiteful.  Always arguing and snapping at everything I said or did.    Eventually it came to a head when, out of the blue one evening, she said “Get out of this house, and don’t come back!”   ‘He’ tried to calm her down.  He looked embarrassed as it was obvious who’s home this was.  She was behaving like a demented person.  I couldn’t believe it.  I left and made my way to the nearby phone box.  There was no telephone in the house, and mobiles were yet to be invented.

I couldn’t stay in the house with them any more.  What had happened?  How could such good and long term friends turn so nasty and spiteful for no reason?  I couldn’t understand it.  I telephoned my brother, who promptly came to my rescue.  He took me to his home and we cancelled the agreement on the flat.  As it was officially an ‘empty’ house, no notice was needed, it was as easy as that.  We then went back to the house to get my clothes and personal belongings.

I went into the room where they were sitting on my sofa, watching my television and probably drinking my coffee in my mugs.  I took a certain amount of pleasure in saying  “You told me to get out, so that is exactly what I have done.  I no longer rent this flat therefore you have until the end of the week to move out.”  The look on their faces showed that they hadn’t expected that!  I packed my belongings up and left.

When my brother and I went back to get my furniture, the house was pretty much like it had been when we moved in.  Only this time they were my friends clothes and rubbish all over the flat, where they had left in a hurry.  Nothing was cleaned up.  It had an uncanny similarity to how it looked when Jim and I first saw the house.

You can make your own minds up as to whether or not that house had an unpleasant entity occupying it.  I just gave you some of the facts, as they happened.  At the time I thought nothing of it.  It was only when I started to write this post that I felt the oppressive weight and saw, what I believe now, was a major influence causing havoc in our lives, and probably others before us.

Jim and I had moved into that house a newly married, happy couple with a lovely home.  In no more than a year our marriage was over, a good long term friendship was over and I was homeless.

I moved in with my brother and his family until I could find a new flat.  This time it had to be a furnished flat.  I had to sell my home quickly to a second hand dealer!  I seem to recall I got £10 for my furniture, I gave the smaller items away and, yes, I left some of the larger items behind in the house, as did the previous occupants!

We still, all worked at the same company.  I didn’t see her again, but did bump into him now and again.  He always gave me a sort of ‘knowing’, slightly embarrassed smile.  The company eventually relocated and those staff who didn’t move with the company were scattered about London in various new jobs.   I heard, some time later, that their marriage had failed, he was an alcoholic and he had lost his job.  She had disappeared. Very sad.

Jim and I remained friends throughout and kept in contact with each other, through phone calls, for a number of years.  Sadly, due to Jim moving flats and me moving to Kent at the same time, we eventually lost touch.

Life moves on, and I moved on. I had many rough roads to travel before I found real happiness, but I did find it!  That’s another story.

Now?  I’m a very happy bunny!

    Babs:

Wow, that was quite a story. THE HOUSE! It sounds like a place of heartbreak and destruction. I wonder why your friends just turned on you like that? Good move, though, when you went back to get all your stuff. I bet they were surprised.

Oh, well, life goes on. I am glad that you finally found happiness.

    By the way, great writing.

    Happy trails.

Babs, what an extraordinary story! I wonder if anyone could find out the previous history of that house – it definitely sounds like there was something there, some backstory that lingered…

I think we lost a great part of old knowledges about energies, spirits etc. Maybe you will laugh, but you had to make friendship with the house, spirits of the house… It helps, really. I had something like this story here, in Italy.

I love a happy ending. Is this a true story? Kind of sounds like it. Have a great day Babs. :)

Swubird: Yes, it was all very confusing to me at the time. As we get older we can look back and see more in our lives.

Omer: I always say that we grow fro our experiences – good or bad :)

Lidian: I think the house was pulled down after we moved out. I Googled it and I think a Hotel now stands where that house(and others) used to be.

Liudmila: I agree in some cases, but I truly think this was not the sort that wanted to befriend anyone. I was young and ignorant of such things then anyway.

Comedy Plus: Oh yes every word is fact. I didn’t even use poetic license ;)

Wow what a story!! I just love the internet! People have so many fun and interesting stories to tell, I used to love sitting and listening to the elderly while on my lunch breaks, they told you stories of whole different worlds it seems.
It’s a pity that most people do not have time to listen..
If not for the internet I would not know you nor your wonderful story!! :)
Did you ever ask the guy that owned it why you could only have the upstairs section? :) Like what the reason was for down stairs remaining un occupied?

    Vic’s Momma:
I never had any grandparents, but my parents used to tell us stories of their past and I loved listening. I must admit, I didn’t think my stories would be interesting to others though :O) I never met the chap that owned the house. Maybe he didn’t have the keys to the downstairs. He had only bought the house to pull down and develop the land. My guess is he was waiting to buy the house next door, then demolish them both. That’s what they used to do then.

What a great and spooky story. It gave me goosebumps. It does seem probable that something had happened in the past to make it an unhappy place. I hope that pulling it down improved it’s aura although I think it probably would not have.

That house sounded so spooky and evil. Am I glad I live in a newish house now. I would have been scared to go to bed if I had been in the Victorian one we had!!

I did enjoy that story Babs. It was very well told and all the better for being true. Anyone can tell a creepy story, but a TRUE creepy story like that takes some beating. Well done. Let’s have some more of your life’s tales please. X

Eric & Flynn: You’re probably right. I doubt pulling the house down did much good really. These things have a habit of hanging around :(

Sandie: I don’t think any of you ever visited that house or I’m sure you would have sensed something. You probably would never have told me though, for fear of scaring me :)

granny grimble: I need to get my thinking cap on for another story soon – though it won’t be scary ;)

Wow, great story Babs, thanks for sharing it. Isn’t it strange how we can see things looking back that weren’t clear at the time. Glad everything turned out, but do you ever wonder what would have happened if you hadn’t moved into that house?

And I do also wonder if the same thing happened to the previous occupants?

    Very strange….

I am always impressed on your memories. I am so forgetful when it comes to my private life (I can just remember every detail a client is telling me at work), I guess I won’t have such stories to tell when I am older.

It must have been a hard year with losing your husband and losing friends and eventually losing that house. But I’m glad to hear you are a happy bunny now. I believe everything happens for a reason, if good or bad, but sometimes it’s hard to see that, especially in the beginning.

    Hugs for you, Babs!

Maureen: Yes, things are always clearer looking back. Maybe it’s because we have more understanding and wisdom. I wonder, if we’d stayed at our first flat, what would have been? We have so many decisions to make, that effect our lives, and most of them when we are too young to understand ;)

Ana: Oh you will have just as many stories to tell. You are still very young yet. All these stories seem insignificant at the time. It was a hard year, though I’ve had harder times. Nothing that I will write about though. I will try and keep things more cheerful :)

It does make you wonder of there was something negative in the environment … glad you’re happy now tho!

Ivanhoe: I’m very glad I didn’t stay in the house any longer. I was well out of it, I think.

Drowsey: I think there was definitely something bad about that house. I have lived in so many houses, I’ve come to believe that something of the people who lived in them is left behind somehow.

Oh, that is sad. :( Maybe another possibility is that your friend was having trouble coping with her partner’s alcoholism even then, and it was making her unhappy and cross with the world.

I don’t dismiss the idea of entities and spirits but I also believe that some buildings are simply of the wrong construction and in the wrong place, giving rise to all kinds of subliminal effects on people and animals.

Hmm. I can feel a post coming on. ;)

A post please :) I want to know how you can get that in one room of a house only.

Daisy: Yes, I think it was BAD too! I’m very glad that the house I live in now is a very GOOD house :)

I’m hoping that house has been torn down and the site paved over by now. That is truly one of the eeriest stories I’ve heard that is actually true. What a lot of “coincidences”…which I don’t believe in…that ended up changing your life.

  28. ShinadeNo Gravatar | 30 November 2008 at 14:18

Oh finally my PC is letting me get out and about. Oh I definitely think the house had some sort of bad entity attached to it. I know a lot of people don’t believe in these things but I have encountered some very strange happenings myself.

What a shame that you lost your friendship over this. Maybe she was possessed by the evil within the house.

Oh my you do tell a story so very well. Now i can’t wait for the next one.

Do you know you are the only online writer of short stories that I read. You’re simply fab Babs!!

    Hey Babs!

I came for the 3rd part of the story…

Oh my, your marriage ended? That is sad (specially because there was no apparent reason, right?)…was it the house?…let me continue to read…

Babs, it was definitely the house…well, I had sensed it since part I! Some entity was too attached to it and couldn’t bear to see anyone living there. Moreover, its life had been unhappy and so it made happy couples part *nodding*. One thing is for sure: it didn’t want happiness in that house, because that would force it to leave for good.

So sad how things turned out with your friends…what an entity in a house does *nodding*! If only you knew, right?

But what matters is that now you are a happy bunny :D !

Great article, and thanks for having shared it with us!

    Cheers

  32. NaturalNo Gravatar | 3 December 2008 at 19:19

Okay the ending wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be, but it does make you wonder what the heck was in that house, bad vibes, karma. You did right: I no longer rent this flat therefore you have until the end of the week to move out.” The look on their faces showed that they hadn’t expected that! What a Kodak moment!
