Birthday Whatsit?

posted by Babs on Monday, 1 December 2008

It’s Mo’s birthday today and she got a few nice gifts, including these lovely flowers.

I know it’s usually Kathy’s ‘What’s That’ guessing posts, or even Jenn Thorson’s ‘Whatsit‘ post but I couldn’t pass this one up.  This is a gift Mo received today, from our sister, granny grimble.  I couldn’t fathom out what it was, and I’m not sure I ever would have if I hadn’t been told.  What do you think this is used for?  You can enlarge the photo if you want to.

I could give a prize of 500 Entrecard credits but I thought maybe, for a laugh, I could give a prize of a photo manipulation (like the one here) for your sidebar, or maybe both.  I will see how difficult it proves to be, and then decide whether the person who guesses correctly deserves, or even wants both!

Get your thinking caps on – What IS this?

As, unfortunately the recipient of many Whatsits as you know…

I think it is to hold your cardigan sweater together… though those cat fobs look rather heavy and could be painful. :)

    PS- Happy Birthday to Mo!

I agree with Jenn…it’s used to keep a sweater or shawl around the shoulders. If it hadn’t have been for the cats, I would have thought it was a watch fob.

We haven’t got a clue, but it is pretty with the kitties on it. The other guesses sound like they are probably right. The flowers are lovely.
    Happy Birthday to Mo.

I’m sorry to say that my first thought was nipple clamps. I SAID I WAS SORRY! I really have no idea, tho I feel like I’ve seen something very similar recently. I’ll echo Jenn’s guess. She sounds like she knows what she’s talking about.

I thought they were jumper cables. But then I realized Jenn is very smart and I liked her idea. My 6th grade teacher used to wear one of those sweater thingies, as well as a nice silver eye glass chain. That lady was way before her time. She had bling!

I haven’t a clue what it is. My first thought was something to keep your glasses on. One of those gag gift things.

    Have a terrific day. :)

All: I feel I must point out that a chain that long would not do much holding together of anything! If any of you were on Twitter earlier, you would have noticed that I told Jenn she was not correct ;)

I may give out clues periodically too.

  8. beetleNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 1:32

Jenn: I thought of that one but the chain is far too long for that.

Lee: A watch fob was my second guess too, but there is nothing to attach a watch to.

JD: Hahahaha! TRUST YOU! That made me laugh out loud :)

Kathy: This is a bit like playing you at your own game ;)

Comedy Plus: Well, Mo actually did clasp it to her glasses. It did work but it wouldn’t hold them for long.

  9. Laura-WhateverebayNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 1:54

that is cute. I can only think of two things.
Is it 1) a Baby bib holder or 2) I cannot recall the name, I used to use something similar for my dresser or large shirts to gather the backs. Please let me know :)

I am afraid Mo let the cat out of the bag today when I wished her a happy Birthday so I shall stay out of this one :O)

  13. chat blancNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 3:06

is it something you thread thru your coat sleeves so you don’t lose your mittens or gloves?? I should probably own something like that!

btw I’m totally on board with the nipple clamps for cat lovers. :D

    Hi Babs!

I’m new here. I’m a faithful reader of the Junk Drawer and now your blog as well.

I love your blog and all your interesting stories. I’m not much of a commenter but I can’t seem to resist a contest – so here’s my guess:

    Could it be mitten/glove clips?

Happy Birthday to Mo – and many many more!

  15. LoriNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 3:14

Oh rats! It looks like chat blanc had the same idea and just beat me to it!

  16. beetleNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 3:26

Eric & Flynn: Sorry but your comment was waiting for moderation for some reason. Yes the kitties are cute :)

  17. beetleNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 3:33

Laura: Welcome and you are VERY close with your guess ;)

Tina: It’s ages since you’ve been here. Yes no giving it away :)

Chat blanc: I just knew you’d be on board for that one ;)
I know I said the chain was long, but it’s not that long – unless you have really, really short arms :)

Lori: Hi and welcome to the comments :) Same answer for you too I’m afraid.

I know this is a wild and crazy guess and really makes no sense unless you have more, but I have seen similar “table cloth weights”.. I know kinda dumb.. that’s what I thought when I saw the ones I saw too… :(

And ps: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MO!! :)

Oh NOES!! I do not want to win but I know what it is :( I can’t help myself, I am a research junkie!!
I think what I saw before was the same thing.. I just “assumed” they were table cloth clips because of were they are located in shops AND you would be giving them as a joke or just plain rude ! hahah

Is Mo a very messy eater? :P hahaha

I think, knowing Mo as well as I do, that these are for holding a serviette around your neck to stop dinner getting on your boobs! Or,keeping to the nipple clamp theme,I think you put the chain around your neck, clamp your nipples and Hey Presto! perky boobies without having to pay out for a boob job. Am I right, am I huh?

oh dear between you and Kathy I will go nuts. I am the worst guesser in the world. I don’t have any idea. Can I win from you and Kathy for being the worst guesser ever?

Happy birthday to you. I was having PC problems again today and now I am so glad that I did get it fixed. I hope you had a grand day and that your evening will be just as fabulous!!

And oh my nipple clamps…ouch!! Okay I’ll say some type of book mark.

Vics Momma: You have guessed it right. I see you don’t have Entrecard, so does that mean you don’t want a famous Babs graphic? I can’t believe it, I am mortified ;)

Gandalf & Grayson: Who cares what it is as long as it has kitties :)

Ana: Hey! That’s not a bad idea. A picture hanger! Not right though ;)

Sindie: The ‘perky boobs’ idea may even be more painful that surgery ;)

Sniffle & Furkids: Sorry, not right, but not a bad guess.

Ivanhoe: Sorry, not a curtain holder. This is far more unusual and funny.

Swubird: Not a cape clip either :)

Shinade: I don’t mean to send you nuts ;) The nipple clamp idea brings tears to the eyes!

  29. Broadway MatronNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 23:05

It is a sweater clip – I guess you have to be a certain age to remember them. That’s quite a nice one actualy…

  30. beetleNo Gravatar | 2 December 2008 at 23:56

Liudmila: We tried it on glasses. It works, but maybe wouldn’t hold for long :)

Broadway Matron: Welcome :) Sorry but it isn’t a sweater clip. The chain is too long to be of much use for that.

  31. Vic's MommaNo Gravatar | 3 December 2008 at 0:04

YAY!!! hahahaha sooooo IS Mo messy?!???! :P I believe I did not see an answer.. hehe just kidding!!
No, no Entrecard and while I love your graphics I just would have no idea what to do with it, so no wasting of your time :) )

It was just lots of fun!! And I knew they had something to do with linen as I had seen them in linen sections before and I am very curious by nature.. have to know everything.. (that’s a bad thing btw!:) But for some reason I had them pegged as tablecloth weights, till i typed it out (in the first comment) and it was just not logical.. so I did a quick search.. you know, having to know and all.. hehe

they are so extra cute though!! I am the same.. anything with cats! :) )

    I thought serviette clips too!

  33. beetleNo Gravatar | 3 December 2008 at 3:14

Vic’s Momma: The answer to your question is yes. When you have large boobies they get in the way a bit ha ha!

Jay: Somehow, I’m not surprised that you would guess correctly :)

  34. MaureenNo Gravatar | 3 December 2008 at 3:28
