A fox out for a walk

We went to the garden centre today and look what we saw.  A fox out for a walk.

I’m sorry but for some reason the sound didn’t record, so you can’t hear him telling us all about her. She was found as a tiny baby in the chap’s garden. He hand reared her, feeding her through the night with a bottle.  What a nice man and what a little beauty she is!

      She was gorgeous! :)

It’s gorgeous! I think they are such beautiful creatures – sad they have such a bad reputation!

It is sad. They are such sweet animals. They hunt, like any other animal, in order to eat and feed their young, but I don’t know why they are disliked so.

I think they are really beautiful as well. I did a post a few months ago about a fox that has taken a liking to me and follows me everyday when I walk. I think he has been around people enough that he isn’t frightened but wild enough not to get too close.

I saw a special on TV once, where that placed cameras in and around a foxes den and we were able to see their family life unfold. That’s when I grew to love them. They have such a family bond.

I wonder, if you threw him some food he would get closer eventually?

” She was found as a tiny baby in the chap’s garden. He hand reared her, feeding her through the night with a bottle.”

OMG…what a nice man indeed! And yes…what a little beauty she is! What a sweet-looking face she has!!

I just wanna pick her up and hug her!

    (((((( Little fox ))))))

And I love how he has her trained to walk on a leash – amazing!

Isn’t it beautiful to witness how man and animal can truly form a close bond and love?

Thanks so much for sharing, Babs. REALLY enjoyed this!

    X to you and Mo!

It was lovely to see, I must admit. Not everybody would have done what that man did. I wonder if he will let her out to fend for herself one day, or if she will be totally domesticated.

      • http://www.triloquist.net Ron

Yes, I was thinking the same thing; wondering if there will come a time when he will let her out to fend for herself one day, or she will be totally domesticated.

A good friend of mine in Florida raised a baby squirrel after it had fallen out of the nest. She bottle fed it for many months, until it was fully grown. Eventually, she did return the squirrel to its natural environment, and it did very well on its own. But it was sad in away because a part of her wanted to keep the squirrel as a pet.

It is very sad when they have to be set free. Did you see the wonderful video of the two men that found and raised a lion? It makes me cry every time I see it. They set it back into the wild and went back years later, in the hopes of seeing it from a distance. They saw him and he saw them. He came bounding up and threw himself at them, kissing them all over. Just like a pet dog! He then introduced his ‘wife’ to them. It was unbelievable! I’d give you a link but I don’t have one.

            *smiling*

Yes, I saw that video and it was AWESOME! I cry every time I see it!

What a cool background on this precious little soul. Way, way cool.

Have a terrific day Babs. Big hugs. :)

She was such a sweet thing, though she did get a tiny bit nervous after a while. Too many people around her I think :)

That is too cool. I love happy animal stories. We have foxes in our neighborhood. They’re smart animals. Haven’t seen one on a leash. I’ve also seen baby foxes. They are adorable.

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

We don’t see enough wildlife here, unfortunately. That’s possibly the first fox I’ve ever seen.

She’s beautiful, and yes, he did a good thing!

The reason they are disliked so … well, there are several. Firstly because they do kill farm stock when they can, and when they do they seem to go on a killing spree and kill many more than they can possibly carry away and eat. It’s probably an inability to cope with so much opportunity, but it doesn’t endear them to farmers, of course. Also, they do carry disease (not their fault!), raid dustbins, and when cornered, disturbed or .. I dunno, deranged in some way .. they will bite children and babies.

Problem is that we’ve destroyed their habitat, as with so much other wildlife, and they have to come into towns to survive, and they cause a lot of mess and transfer sarcoptic mange and other parasites to domestic dogs.

Our fault, as usual, for not making enough room in ‘our’ world for the rest of the animal kingdom. It’s like the poor badgers. :(

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Man would rid the world of any animal that gets in the way of what he wants, sadly. Foxes don’t bite people as a matter of course. It’s only when they are cornered or injured and hurting. Most animals will bite in that situation. They have a very placid nature. I still think they get a raw deal.

      • Jay of The Depp Effect

I used to think the same – that they only bit when cornered etc, not that I don’t think they get a raw deal, because I do. But I remember two or three stories in the news where urban foxes had entered houses and randomly bitten people, once, a couple of children actually asleep in their beds! The parents were watching TV and hadn’t seen the fox come in, and only knew when they heard screams. That was in London.

I am convinced that there was something wrong with the foxes that do that, because it’s not normal behaviour, but the fact is that when we encroach on a wild animal’s territory, we force them into unnatural behaviours. Our fault, not theirs. :(

This is all I could find on a quick Google search, but it mentions the attack I’m remembering and does highlight the problem. As I said, I’m not in favour of blaming the wildlife and do NOT advocate culling, but it is something to be aware of.

Oh, here you go – the original news item, from the BBC -

          • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I agree that you should never trust a naturally wild animal and when we lived in Kent we were very aware of the possible dangers of foxes that roamed the area late at night. We never let our cats out overnight. As you say. It’s not the foxes fault but ours. I remember that news item. It was awful.

  • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

What? OMG!! I’ve NEVER seen a fox, on a leash, as a pet! In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fox at all!

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I’ve never seen one up close either! So beautiful :)

      • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

        Amazing. Truly.

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

That is really extraordinary! Beautiful creatures. Still, I doubt it’s a good idea to “domesticate” wild animals. They do grow up, and when they do, they usually have such strong “wild instincts” that take over their behaviour. Perhaps a safe but more natural environment would be best for this little girl.

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I think he was a farmer and I imagine he will slowly give her freedom – as and when she wants it. He was very aware that she is a wild animal. He seemed to know his stuff :)

  • IVANHOE

She is adorable! Amazing how wild animal can become domesticated with a little TLC :)

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Even large, wild animals can bond with humans and it’s lovely to see :)

  • http://maniaravings.com/ Jaffer

What a beauty ! An a cute face to match too !

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

      She was lovely Jaffer :)

  • http://www.roses2rainbows.com/ Linda R.

Oh what a sweetie. I’m so glad he took her in. You say you think he may release her back to her natural world? I would be so torn to have to make that decision. I guess it is whatever is best for her overall. Thanks for sharing this.

    • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I don’t think we can ever keep them forever, because their natural behaviour would come out eventually, surely?
