Flowers, and rolling in the grass!

posted by Babs on Monday, 12 July 2010

I hope some of you know a thing or two about plants, because I’m going to ask you a gardening question.  No, don’t run away, I need your help.  Well, I don’t actually need your botanical help but I would like your comments anyway, so please continue reading.

Mo and I have been planting some …. well …. plants and I noticed something very weird the next day.  Look at this one and you will see two different colour flowers coming from the same plant.

flowers1

Now I know what you’re all saying  “It’s just where the roots of two plants got entangled”.  Well, that’s what I thought when I saw it.

BUT……

Look at this next one.

Flowers 2

This one is much easier to lift the leaves and examine and I kid you not, the two different colour flowers are growing from the same plant.   You want proof?  Tough!  You only get my word for it because I couldn’t lift the leaves and squat in an ungainly position to take the photo on my own.  “Where was Mo?” I hear you ask.  Well Mo would have been willing to hold the plant for me, but I’m not as nimble as I once was, so laying on the floor to get a side shot of a plant stem is just not an option.  In fact………

I was taking photos of the cats and I thought “Wouldn’t it be nice to get some shots down at their level, instead of looking down on them.  Livvie was on our decking (about a foot off the ground) so I grabbed the opportunity.

I assumed a ’squat’ position…..

involuntarily rolled backwards, ending up with my legs in the air…..

laughed like a drain…..

scrambled (and I mean scrambled) to my feet…..

tripped on the guy rope holding our gazebo down and broke it!

It should have been on video. AND I didn’t even get the shot of Livvie! You still expect plant stem photos?

Here is proof if you want it.  One broken guy rope.

Mo fixing a new one up.

Mo

So here’s the question.  Has anyone ever seen this in a plant before, or does anybody know how it happens?

More to the point.  Does anybody know how I can get decent floor shots and stay upright?

No guarantees that I'm right, but they look like Petunias. Beats me on the many colors. Maybe it's the nature of that variety? The acidity of the soil? ??

I do wish there had been video of you going a$$ over teakettle. That would have been very blog-worthy indeed! bwahahahahaha!

  • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

Sorry love, but as you already know I am seriously botanically disinclined! I haven't a CLUE as to what flowers those may be – nor would I be able to help you get decent floor shots and stay upright!

  • http://twitter.com/roses2rainbows Linda R.

Mixed colors on the same plant. I don't know, maybe pollination? Regarding the floor shots, what about a mini tripod for your camera? My brother-in-law got one for his birthday. Just a thought. And your little flailing legs episode would have made good video.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

They do so many things to genetically alter plants now a days that I don't doubt you for a second. Impatiens right?

I don't know how you get the floor shots, is there a kid in the neighborhood you could hire?

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

There is never a video camera around when you need one. I'm probably thankful for that though ;)

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Oh I do know, and Mo laughed like crazy when I told her of your drowned plant Ha ha ha!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Impatiens? All I know is they're flowers, and they make the garden look pretty.

I could carry a small stool around with me I suppose, or just accept the fact that I'm too doddery for floor shots.

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Even with a mini tripod, I'd still need to get down there, and risk another roll in the grass. You're right, it would have made a great video.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

    Doddery! What a wonderful word!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Another Brit word, I take it?

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

You're the Brit, don't you know? I've never heard it before. Sometimes I
wonder if you don't just make them up as you go. Do you?

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Ha ha! So I am :) No I don't make them up. They're all real words. Lookie here…..

Adj.1.doddery – mentally or physically infirm with age; “his mother was doddering and frail”

  • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

    Ahahhaahhahahaahhaah!
Yeah, I can't be trusted with any plants or flowers!

  • Ruth

I don't know. (I just woke up after two evening naps. I'm not good for thinking now.)

When you said 'guy rope' I thought it was a made up term. Don is sitting here. I asked him is there something called a 'guy rope'? He said yes. It's what you hold down a dirigible with. Or a tent awning. Oh, ok.

It's 8:50pm. This is when I usually go to bed. Haven't decided if I'm going to, still.

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Yep, I think you sound as if you just woke up from a nap ha ha!

It's 2am here, and I am just about to go to bed, though I'll probably be on my laptop in bed for a while before I go to sleep. This is because I don't live on a farm ;)

  • http://www.weworkforcheese.com Nicky

Does your camera have a timer? You can set the timer, set the camera on the floor, and that's it. No toppling, doddering or broken guy ropes.

  • DrowseyMonkey

I'm really no expert but the first one looks like impatiens and the 2nd a petunia. i've seen them in mixed colours before. They're very pretty :) And I love your dedication to getting the shot, lol

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

The timer sounds good, but it's not a point and shoot camera. In order to set the photo up I have to get down there in the first place. I think a telescopic viewfinder might be a good invention for oldies like me :)

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

You have? All coming from the same stem? And I thought I'd witnessed a miracle in my garden, lol.

  • http://idothings.info JD at I Do Things

I don't have the answer, but I've seen the same phenomenon. I used to have 4 o'clocks in red and yellow. Over the years, they've merged into the most beautiful mixed shades of red, yellow, and orange. Maybe you've got magic dirt?

And I love how well you know your readers. Of COURSE we want proof! Or Mo!

  • http://thegoodthebadtheworse.blogspot.com Linda Medrano

Those flowers are so pretty. I think the first ones are impatiens, and the second is a petunia, (I think). Do you know anyone named “Daphne”? That's such a wonderful Brit name, isn't it? And is Mo short for Maureen? I have a rose bush that has all red roses, but an occasional white one comes in. Weird magic!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Well there you go then. Anything is possible if your red had sex with yellow and popped out orange babies!

I think I am learning that photographic evidence is a must wherever possible.

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I think you must be right, though the first one I know by the household name 'Busy Lizzie'. Oh I think a white rose on a red rose bush would be beautiful!

I can honestly say that I've never known a Daphne. I haven't heard the name for many years, so it must have gone out of fashion. Yes, Mo is short for Maureen.

  • http://maniaravings.com Jaffer

    “Plant Drowner !”

Seriously – it still is funny Meleah.

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I laughed so much at that photo!

  • http://mommamiameaculpa.com meleahrebeccah

    AHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHHA!!!!!!

  • http://comedyplus.blogspot.com/ Comedy Plus

I don't have an answer for any of your questions. Especially the last one and if someone can help me with that one I'd be forever grateful too.

    Have a terrific day. :)

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Ha ha! I guess nobody can answer the last one eh?

  • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

I can't help you with the plant thing, but I can tell you to make sure you “tuck and roll” to prevent injury the next time you decide to break some guy rope.

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Ha ha ha! I did, I did, only backwards! I went with the flow, as they say.

  • http://www.shoot-me-now.com Katherine Murray

I can't begin to tell you about the plants because I am still laughing at your graceful mishap. You sound WAY too much like me… I worry for you!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Did I even hint that it was graceful? I tell you, if I hadn't been wearing jeans it most certainly would not have been! I worry for me too ;)

  • Swubird

    Babs:

Sorry. I flunked plant school. Don't know anything about the little darlings except that they are sure pretty. I will consult my Queen. She is a plant maniac. Our backyard is a jungle of horticultural exotica. So I will be back with her opinion.

    In the meantime, happy trails.

Can picture it! Really – living with a pyromaniac I have witnessed similar scenes – but theu all invole flames at some point – some larger than others! Oh yes, and there was the time the fire engine was called! Hmmmm!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Flames are not so good, though I imagine it could be funny after the event.

  • Liudmila

I have the same curiosity with Fuchsias this year. May they came from the same place?

After I've seen your photos, I think it can be this:
    or that plant-breeder like to joke;
or he loves beer too much (this is more probable, for me)

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Ha ha! You could be right. I rather like the fact that we get two for the price of one :)

  • http://www.thedeppeffect.com Jay at The Depp Effect

Hahaha! I'm afraid I'm no botanist. I have had plants like that, particularly busy lizzies and petunias, but I just assumed, as you did, that I had two plants tangled up together!

Fun post! I can imagine you rolling backwards, legs in the air, because I've done it myself. Usually it's Sid's fault! LOL!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

Well, the important thing is that they are pretty. I think that's enough for me too :)

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

It doesn't really matter, but I was always a 'Why and how?' child. I haven't changed much over the years.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/M7URQRGKVFNFKDSKRMC2SKRDXE Maureen K

I really think Mo needs to follow you around with a camera herself. Oh! The shots she could get of squatting and tripping for us all to enjoy! ;)

But really, those plants are a query… I don't have any help in that regard at all! Sorry!

  • http://beetle-blog.com/ babs (beetle)

I am very glad that Mo does NOT follow me around with a camera! Not a pretty sight :)
